Inclement weather forced an IndiGo flight en route from Mumbai to Guwahati to divert to Dhaka, Bangladesh, leading to an unscheduled emergency landing. The unexpected change in route, attributed to adverse weather conditions, left passengers on board stranded for an extended period.

The flight, initially destined for Guwahati, had to alter its course due to poor weather conditions on Saturday. IndiGo, in response to the situation, issued a statement explaining the diversion. “Due to operational reasons, an alternate set of crew is being arranged to operate the flight from Dhaka to Guwahati. The passengers were kept informed of updates and were served with refreshments on board.”

Expressing their frustration over the abrupt diversion, passengers, including former Mumbai Youth Congress chief Suraj Singh Thakur, took to social media to share their experiences. In a post on X, Thakur stated, “I took @IndiGo6E flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati. But due to dense fog, the flight couldn’t land in Guwahati. Instead, it landed in Dhaka. Now all the passengers are in Bangladesh without their passports, we are inside the plane.”

IndiGo acknowledged the inconvenience and expressed regret, as reported by news agency ANI. The passengers were stuck on the flight for approximately nine hours before it finally departed from Dhaka at around 11.20 PM, experiencing a three-hour delay, according to PTI.

The adverse weather conditions weren’t limited to this incident. Earlier on the same day, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI Airport) faced disruptions, with operations temporarily halted due to severe weather conditions. As a result, 20 flights were diverted, and several others experienced delays. The affected flights were redirected to Jaipur, Amritsar, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, and Chandigarh.

The challenges in aviation were compounded by Delhi’s ‘very poor’ air quality, leading to heavy smog and reduced visibility. The overall weather conditions were attributed to a severe cold wave gripping India, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting severe to extremely dense fog in parts of northwest India for the next three to four days.
